TEST OF GENERAL RELATIVITY : 1995 - 2002 MEASUREMENT OF FRAME - DRAGGING Ignazio Ciufolini

چکیده
After an introduction on phenomena due to spin and mass-energy currents on clocks and photons, we review the 1995-2001 measurements of gravitomagnetic field of Earth and Lense-Thirring effect obtained by analyzing the orbits of the two laserranged satellites LAGEOS and LAGEOS II; this method has provided a direct measurement of Earth’s gravitomagnetism with accuracy of the order of 20 %. A future accurate measurement of the Lense-Thirring effect, at the level of 1% accuracy, may include the LARES experiment that will also provide other basic tests of general relativity and gravitation. Finally, we report the latest measurement of the LenseThirring effect, obtained in 2002 with the LAGEOS satellites over nearly 8 years of data. This 2002 result fully confirms and improves our previous measurements of the Earth frame-dragging: the Lense-Thirring effect exists and its experimental value is within ∼ 20% of what is predicted by Einstein’s theory of general relativity.

متن کاملLunar Laser Ranging, Gravitomagnetism and Frame-Dragging
During the past century Einstein’s theory of General Relativity gave rise to an experimental triumph, however, there are still aspects of this theory to be measured or more accurately tested. One of the main challenges in experimental gravitation, together with the direct detection of gravitational waves, is today the accurate measurement of the gravitomagnetic field generated by the angular mo...
متن کاملA test of general relativity using the LARES and LAGEOS satellites and a GRACE Earth gravity model
We present a test of general relativity, the measurement of the Earth's dragging of inertial frames. Our result is obtained using about 3.5 years of laser-ranged observations of the LARES, LAGEOS, and LAGEOS 2 laser-ranged satellites together with the Earth gravity field model GGM05S produced by the space geodesy mission GRACE. We measure [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is the Ea...
متن کاملGravitomagnetism, Frame-dragging and Lunar Laser Ranging
Gravitomagnetism is a phenomenon predicted by Einstein’s theory of General Relativity, it consists in the interaction generated by a mass current in a way formally similar to magnetism generated by an electric current. A number of experiments have been proposed and carried out to accurately measure the gravitomagnetic interaction. The LAGEOS satellites observations [1], using the GRACE models, ...
متن کاملMeasuring the Relativistic Perigee Advance with Satellite Laser Ranging
The pericenter advance of a test body by a central mass is one of the classical tests of General Relativity. To day this effect is measured with radar ranging by the perihelion shift of Mercury and other planets, in the gravitational field of Sun, with a relative accuracy of the order of 10–10. In this paper we explore the possibility of a measurement of the pericenter advance in the gravitatio...
